How Resin 3D Printed Figures Are Made: From STL File to Finished Statue

A finished resin figure can look like a single carefully crafted collectible, but before it reaches that stage it goes through a long series of digital and physical processes.

From preparing the 3D model to printing individual parts, cleaning, assembling and finishing them, every stage can affect the quality of the final statue.

In this guide, we take a closer look at how a resin 3D printed figure goes from an STL file to a finished physical model.

1. Starting With the 3D Model

Every resin figure starts as a digital 3D model.

For 3D printing, models are commonly supplied as STL files. A figure may be provided as one complete model, but larger and more detailed statues are usually divided into multiple separate parts.

This can include:

  • head and body sections

  • arms and legs

  • weapons and accessories

  • hair or clothing elements

  • base components

  • transparent or effect parts

Splitting a figure correctly is important. The parts need to fit together after printing while keeping seams as discreet as possible.

2. Preparing the Files for Resin Printing

Having an STL file does not automatically mean that a model is ready to print.

Before printing, the files need to be checked and prepared. This may involve inspecting the model for problems, choosing the correct orientation and adding supports.

Orientation is particularly important.

A poorly positioned part can require excessive supports, create visible marks on important surfaces or increase the chance of a failed print.

The goal is to find a balance between print reliability, surface quality and the amount of post-processing required later.

3. Slicing the Model

Once the parts have been prepared, they are processed in slicing software.

The slicer converts the 3D model into thousands of individual layers that a resin printer can reproduce one by one.

Settings such as layer height, exposure and support configuration influence both print reliability and surface detail.

High-detail collectible figures often contain very small features, including facial details, hair strands, fabric textures and decorative elements. Preserving these details is one of the main advantages of resin printing.

4. Printing the Parts

During resin printing, each layer of the model is cured using UV light.

Depending on the size and complexity of a figure, a complete statue may consist of only a few large components or dozens of individual parts.

Large bases, weapons, wings and other oversized elements can require separate print jobs.

Printing is therefore not simply a matter of pressing a button and waiting for a finished figure. Every batch needs to print successfully before the complete model can move to the next stage.

5. Washing and Curing

Freshly printed resin parts still contain uncured resin on their surfaces.

They first need to be carefully cleaned. After washing, the parts are cured with UV light so that the resin reaches its final physical properties.

This stage needs to be controlled carefully.

Insufficient cleaning can leave residue on the surface, while poor curing can affect both the durability and finish of the model.

6. Removing Supports and Cleaning the Surface

Supports are essential during printing, but they leave small contact points where they were attached to the model.

These marks need to be removed and cleaned.

Depending on the part, this can involve cutting away supports, sanding contact points and correcting minor surface imperfections.

Extra care is especially important around delicate areas such as fingers, hair, thin weapons and small decorative details.

7. Test Fitting and Assembly

Before permanent assembly, the individual parts should be test fitted.

This allows us to check that connections align correctly and identify any areas that may need adjustment.

A well-designed model should assemble cleanly, but small corrections can sometimes be necessary because physical printing introduces tolerances that do not exist in the digital file.

For complex statues, assembly itself can become a significant part of the process.

8. Preparing the Figure for Painting

If the figure will be painted, the surface needs to be properly prepared first.

Visible seams, support marks or imperfections become much more noticeable once paint is applied, so preparation is critical.

The figure is then primed to create a consistent surface for painting.

At this point, the original digital sculpt has finally become a physical canvas ready for the painter.

9. Hand Painting the Figure

Painting transforms the printed model into a finished collectible.

Depending on the design, the process may include:

  • base colors

  • highlights and shadows

  • skin tones

  • metallic surfaces

  • weathering

  • transparent effects

  • object source lighting

  • detailed eyes and facial features

  • different matte, satin or glossy finishes

Complex figures can require many hours of work.

Unlike mass-produced factory pieces, hand-painted figures can also be adjusted to emphasize particular materials, effects or details of the sculpt.

10. Final Inspection

Before a finished figure is complete, all parts need to be checked again.

This includes inspecting the paintwork, connections, fragile elements and overall presentation of the statue.

Only after these stages is the model ready to become a finished collectible.
